Healing from Childhood Trauma

Has your child experienced a trauma, and you’re worried about how it is affecting him/her?

Examples of trauma include, but are not limited to:
* Automobile accidents
* Natural disasters
* Medical-related events (i.e., surgeries, procedures, hospital stays, ambulance rides, etc.)
* Near-drowning
* Witnessing or learning about the traumatic injury or death of a loved one
* Any event where your child experienced great fear, and may have feared imminent injury or death of self or a loved one

Some children may avoid reminders or discussions about the trauma, which is a defense mechanism of the psyche in order to protect itself from pain. I respect any defense mechanism a child may demonstrate because it is there for a very good reason. However, as your child begins to feel comfortable in therapy and builds trust in me as their therapist, then the defenses eventually soften and exploration of the traumatic event starts to naturally occur.

I will work sensitively with your child, getting to know your child and building trust as we work on stabilization and developing coping skills. I will meet with you to discuss the goals for treatment, and I will meet with your child in our therapy sessions, providing them with the opportunity to play, express, and create that which will help them process and heal from the traumatic event in a way that is not overwhelming.
